On Board Training Superintendent - Tanker Master Mariner

As an On Board Training Superintendent at BSM, you will be responsible for designing, coordinating and delivering comprehensive onboard training programmes that enhance seafarer competence, safety culture and operational performance. You will act as the primary bridge between ship and shore for training delivery, competency assessment and development of structured learning pathways across our fleet.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement and maintain the Company’s onboard training strategy and annual training plans in line with statutory requirements, client expectations and company policies. Design and update training syllabi, lesson plans, practical exercises and assessment criteria for bridge, engine and catering departments, ensuring currency with industry best practice and regulatory changes. Coordinate and deliver onboard training visits, drills and workshops; provide hands-on coaching and mentorship to sea staff during visits. Assess crew competence through observation, assessments and performance reviews; maintain accurate training and competency records and recommend individual development plans. Liaise with Fleet and Technical Superintendents, crewing, HSQE and clients to identify skills gaps, training needs and prioritise interventions. Manage the evaluation of training effectiveness, collect feedback, analyse results and implement continuous improvement actions to raise standards. Ensure all training materials, manuals and e-learning content are current, readily available onboard and compliant with ISM/ISO and other relevant standards. Support incident investigations by reviewing training and competence records, identifying root causes related to human factors and recommending corrective actions. Prepare and present regular training reports, statistics and recommendations to senior management and clients. Promote a positive safety and learning culture across the fleet and contribute to company-wide development initiatives. Qualifications & Experience Bachelor’s degree in a maritime-related discipline, seafaring qualification i.e Chief Engineer Minimum 1–5 years’ seagoing experience as a sailing Master on Tanker Vessel or shore-based experience in a training, competency or superintendent role within ship management. Recognized instructor/trainer qualifications (e.g. Train the Trainer) and assessor certification are highly desirable. Skills & Competencies In-depth knowledge of maritime training standards, STCW requirements, competency frameworks and relevant regulations. Proven ability to design practical, competency-based training and assessment tools. Excellent coaching, communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage diverse crews. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple training programmes across a fleet. Analytical skills to review training effectiveness and translate findings into actionable improvements. Proficiency in English and competency with office applications and learning management systems.
