Ruby on Rails Engineer Job Summary We are seeking a Ruby on Rails Engineer to serve as an individual contributor responsible for designing, developing, modernizing, and maintaining scalable enterprise applications. This role is ideal for an engineer with strong Ruby on Rails experience, cloud and DevOps exposure, and the ability to contribute independently while collaborating closely with engineering, product, QA, and business teams. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in enterprise environments, upgrading legacy Rails applications, building API-driven systems, supporting cloud-native deployments, and contributing to code quality through peer reviews and engineering best practices. Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD, structured data ingestion, and AI/ML-enabled applications is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable Ruby on Rails applications. Serve as an individual contributor on complex engineering initiatives. Modernize legacy Rails applications, including framework upgrades, dependency updates, and performance improvements. Build and maintain RESTful and GraphQL APIs for internal and external systems. Develop cloud-native application components using AWS services such as Lambda, Step Functions, DynamoDB, SQS, SES, CloudFront, EC2, and S3. Support Kubernetes-based deployments, containerized application environments, and blue-green deployment strategies. Contribute to CI/CD pipeline improvements using tools such as GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Jenkins, and Travis CI. Conduct peer code reviews to promote quality, maintainability, reliability, and adherence to engineering standards. Collaborate with DevOps teams to support deployment automation, monitoring, and production reliability. Implement observability, logging, alerting, and incident response support using tools such as Datadog and PagerDuty. Develop data ingestion, ETL, structured file processing, and complex validation workflows. Partner with product managers, business stakeholders, QA teams, and other engineers to understand requirements and deliver effective technical solutions. Contribute to technical discussions, architecture reviews, estimation, and sprint planning. Integrate third-party APIs such as Salesforce, HubSpot, NetSuite, OpenAI, Stripe, and Twilio. Support AI/ML-enabled features, including RAG-based search, LLM integrations, and data-driven analytics platforms.

Required Qualifications

Professional software engineering experience with Ruby on Rails. Strong experience building, maintaining, and upgrading Ruby on Rails applications. Experience working as an individual contributor in enterprise or scalable application environments. Experience developing secure, scalable APIs using REST and/or GraphQL. Database experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, DynamoDB, or similar technologies. Experience with AWS, Heroku, Azure, or on-premise deployment environments. Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices. Exposure to Kubernetes, Docker, containerized environments, or cloud-based deployment models. Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, clean code, automated testing, and maintainability. Experience participating in peer code reviews and collaborative engineering workflows. Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with multiple Ruby on Rails versions, including legacy and modern Rails applications. Experience upgrading Rails applications from legacy versions to modern Rails versions. Experience with AI/ML platforms, RAG applications, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Ollama, or open-source LLMs. Experience using Python in AI/ML or data processing contexts. Experience with structured file ingestion, ETL, data modeling, and complex validation workflows. Experience with event-driven architectures using Kafka, Snowflake, or Rudderstack. Experience with observability tools including Datadog dashboards, alerts, and logging. Experience supporting incident management or on-call workflows using PagerDuty. Experience in healthcare, financial services, e-commerce, HR technology, or large-scale consumer applications. MBA or strong business analysis experience is a plus. This person should be comfortable modernizing legacy applications, building scalable APIs, improving deployment practices, supporting cloud-native systems, and participating in peer reviews to maintain strong engineering standards. This role does not require formal people management or technical lead responsibilities, but it does require ownership, clear communication, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to architecture discussions and delivery planning.
